Last week workroom partnered with Milkmade to celebrate Garbstore’s F/W 2010 collection, The Road Below. The result was a real good time. Owner Brian Lee has put together a beautiful store nestled in a cozy Abbot Kinney bungalow. It felt like an awesome house party with great clothes, shoes, and accessories lining every wall. We did just make a Spice Girls reference, please don’t judge. That song is awesome. Cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, paprika, mustard! Aren’t spices great? A touch here and there can take a culinary creation to the next level, and we like to think the same applies to our wardrobe. We’re digging spicey tones, their earthiness plays well against the fall months and allows for interesting color combinations when used as neutrals. You've Got Sole!

We’re on the hunt for bigger better soles this fall! We’re looking for shoes , boots, or a pair of neat shoe/boot hybrids with thicker-substantial soles to pair with our heavier fall weight fabrics like moleskin and tweed. We’ve been peepin a few awesome styles thanks to some of our adored online retailers. It’s exciting to see the fun designers are having in using different types of soles, whether they’re colored, crepe, rubber, or leather, infusing some much needed visual interest into men’s footwear. Shop Talk with WHARF

Recently opened Rhode Island retailer, WHARF, is on a quest to bring quality craftsmanship and great service to men of all lifestyles and ages. We first heard of WHARF on one of our favorite menswear blogs, Freeman, in an awesome and comprehensive interview that you can check out here. In that interview, owner Robert Babigian drops some serious knowledge. When Darian from Freeman asks “So the Gent who shops at WHARF is…?” Robert replies, “A man who believes that his style is not about the pieces he owns, but the intrinsic value he derives from their utilization in his wardrobe.” Oh dang, that's real style isn't it? We sort of had a moment that made us question our entire wardrobe, but in a good way. Not sure if it was an Oprah worthy "Aha! Moment," but a chord was struck and things definitely became clearer. Shortly after reading the interview we were in touch with Robert, and he was nice enough to expand on the quote by picking some fall essentials he feels reflect what WHARF represents to their customers. His styled look, pictured above, is so bang on, we want it all. Robert breaks down the whole look for us. Shop and enjoy!

Dunderdon J38 Wool Check Outdoor Jacket($290.00). I love the Dunderdon collection for Fall. Love. It. This Outdoor Jacket, especially, has a great, clean aesthetic, the utilization factor with multiple pockets is high and the pullout pile liner makes the outer wool garment more of a car coat which I love when it's still a bit balmier in early Fall. Throw in the understated plaid tones and it goes with everything and you can punch up the color with accessories and under layers or keep it more monotone as i did here.

Steven Alan Lowell Sport Coat ($375.00). You will NOT find a better fitting, more well-made deconstructed blazer this Fall. I dare you. Steven did such a phenomenal job with this jacket- from the constitution of the Cotton/Wool fabric blend that makes it the right weight and drape so perfectly, to the taped seams and waist that gives it a bit of a cinched look to fit just right. Even the working buttonholes have an added herringbone twill reinforced cuff and wrist placket. So detailed. Amazing.

WHARF private label shirting ($139.00) and The Hill-side ties ($75.00). Maybe it is because it is my first private label piece and because the gents behind The Hill-side, the brothers Emil and Sandy Corsillo, were early supporters of my shop and have become fast friends that I love this combination. It is also because with my seven models of shirt from "The ONE" to "the SEVEN" and the endless ties and pocket squares from the Hill-side, i can spend every day with a new matchup.

Baldwin Denim ($220.00-250.00). I just did a review at shopwharf.com of my personal pair of "The 77" from Baldwin. I love the way they have broken in and the lighter feel of the Pima cotton denim makes them like a second skin without lacking substance of a quality denim (it is Cone Mills selvedge after all).

MAKR button tote ($160.00)- pick a tote or carryall. There's a bunch of great ones out there, but I am partial to Jason's work at MAKR. We have a similar outlook on our businesses and life and the use we derive from our goods. Quality is priority one and MAKR's beautiful aesthetics are born from it. He nails it every time.

Cause and Effect belt in natural chamois leather ($150.00). This is my personal version that Billy made for me as a gift, but we currently carry a couple versions like the Sailing buckle and natural leather one and a copper buckle and tanned leather version. Each is very unique and gives you a different vibe. All of course are made in Tennessee by hand with quality leathers (many from Horween) and pounded, original hardware.

The accessories- You might not see them, but they are there. I am never without my: Randolph Engineering sunglasses ($140.00) (black matte aviators this time), MAKR angle wallet ($80.00) for my business cards, and a Bertucci 2T Field ($140.00) watch which I can swap out straps as needed to compliment my look- currently the black and drab stripe nylon version.

Fall Essential from Una Mae's

As a Chicago native I have a special place in my heart for Una Mae’s. I remember shopping there when I was in high school looking for the coolest vintage finds, and Una Mae’s never failed to disappoint. I still own the first piece I ever bought from them, a 1970’s wide lapel button down with a rad screen print of Goofy on the back. Don’t judge, it’s totally choice. Like the Wicker Park neighborhood their nestled in, Una Mae's has evolved from its original incarnation. They still carry the best vintage in Chicago, but with the addition of great new contemporary lines they’ve established themselves as a destination retail spot in the Windy City. You make me feel so fine! Bordeaux, Merlot, Cabernet, we’ll take a glass of each please. Our love of wine drinking aside, we’re really digging all the rich red we’re seeing for fall. Red is such a powerful color and we’re totally on board with these deeper more purple reds. It’s almost sexier and more sophisticated than the fire engine reds we’ve seen in previous seasons. We love the outdoors! Well sorta… but this fall we definitely want to infuse some outdoorsy pieces into our every day wear. Rugged-utilitarian camping and fishing details are emerging as a trend, but we’re being cautious, we don’t want to overdo it and end up looking like we’re about go fly fishing in the LA river. Gross. Luckily retailers are offering stellar hat options, and through them we see a great opportunity to safely and authentically explore this trend. A Drop in the Bucket

Backpacks are back! We for one couldn’t be happier, rucksacks, knapsacks, packsacks, yes please! The amount of great utilitarian and fashionable packs we’ve been seeing around is making us want one of our very own! We’re specifically feeling bucket bags, for their unique shape and innate ruggedness. Pictured above is one of our faves for fall and comes from Collina Strada, a line we love who showed at workroom last month. Collina Strada uses vegetable-dyed leathers accounting for the beautiful rich color of the bag. Recently we've noticed our beloved retailers getting more apt at providing styling options for their customers. We love love this initiative. The more styling tips the better! We need to see how we can fit a piece into our wardrobe and maximize the amount of looks and wears we can get out of it. With the cult-like following of street style blogs like jak and jil, and the success of user generated blogs like lookbook.nu as constant sources of inspiration for how to dress, it's no wonder that retailers are exploring strong styling options in an effort to sell their merch. Two of our fave online retailers constantly impressing us with their always on point styling, are Nasty Gal and Pixie Market. They always seem to be selling a look instead of just a singular item and we can't get enough. Online retailer Les Nouvelles is also exploring styling options with technology directly on their site. They have developed an option for shoppers to "be your own stylist" by selecting pieces that then appear "jeujed" up on a mannequin form. Other stores such as Blackbird and UPC boutique use their own blogs to offer style genius for items available in their stores. Similarly Charlie and Lee and Oki-ni have recently used short videos to give their merchandise a styled up cinematic vibe. Keep it up!! We're big fans.

Workroom Doubles in Size

The second edition of Workroom was double in size from last season’s show of 21 exhibitors. Held Aug. 17–19 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas, the 45 exhibitors at Workroom offered buyers a focused slice of fashion-forward brands in the men’s and women’s contemporary market, including Factory by Erik Hart, Left Field, LnA, Surface to Air and The Stronghold.

Workroom drew buyers from Barneys Japan, Beams, Tobi, Urban Outfitters, Harvey Nichols, American Rag, Ships, Neiman Marcus, Oak and Holt Renfrew.

Hillary Taymour of Collina Strada said she was pleased with the number of new accounts that wrote the brand’s leather and canvas bags for Fall deliveries. Taymour has exhibited at Project in the past but felt her brand was more visible as one of the few accessories designers at a smaller show, such as Workroom. “Even though there was less traffic [than Project], I feel like people were coming to buy at Workroom. They weren’t just browsing,” Taymour said. “The buyers that walk into Workroom, they were looking for that aesthetic. They were more prone to write orders.”

Randy Brewer, owner of Convert in Berkeley, Calif., shopped Workroom, ENK Vegas and Project. Within the criteria of companies that manufactured domestically and used eco-friendly materials, Brewer said, he was looking for “something a little more innovative, beyond the norm.” At Workroom, Brewer said, the selection encompassed “a lot of really interesting and forward brands,” and he wrote Left Field, Kanvis and Dickie’s 1922 replica work wear for the first time at the show. “I like when they separate out a separate niche,” Brewer said.

Workroom’s open layout was a platform for young brands to get noticed. Kfir Levy, owner and designer of Kanvis, relaunched his line at Workroom last season and returned this season. “You can breathe there. [Buyers] spend more time looking around. You get a lot more attention and interest,” Levy said. Levy took a more artistic approach to Kanvis in its relaunched form, stepping it up from the cut-and-sew basics and raw denim he made from 2006 to 2008. Levy’s parents were fashion designers, so he grew up in garment factories. “I know the industry from the non-glamorous point of view. It’s fashion with no pretense. I’m not trying to be the next cool guy, super-cool brand. I’ve been having more fun with it, more of a creative expression, a lot more fashion and art.”

The buyers have responded to Levy’s more daring pieces, such as a strapless jumper with full pants. “There wasn’t a single store that didn’t write it,” Levy said of the jumper. Wholesale price points for denim with subtle details and style lines ranged from $65 to $75. In women’s, basics ranged from $22 to $28 and topped out at $72 for a cotton/rayon layered dress.—Rhea Cortado

Left Field | workroom preview August 2010

Left Field launched in Brooklyn in 1998 and over a decade later that’s where it’s still based. All design and majority of the production are done domestically, which is pretty apropos considering designer Christian McCann draws inspiration from fabric and details that explore America’s heritage and rich subcultures, which have ranged from Pennsylvania Mine Workers and Midwestern Farmers to Ivy League Athletes and 1970’s Motorcycle Gangs. All varied, yet distinctly American. For S/S 2011 Left Field was inspired by the beat poets of the 50’s with a touch of the psychedelic 60’s. Pretty Groovy! Keep It Simple

We fell in love love love with the Keel's Simple Diary a few months back. Not only are they freaking adorable from the outside, amazing selection of colors, but it's what's inside them that really got us. Simple Diary offers quirky fill in the blank, open ended, and multiple choice questions that provide structure, insight, and humor to the monotony of daily journaling. For example "Your Day was (only choose one) () a good call. () showtime. () a cold shower." Definitely showtime!! The Simple Diary was created by internationally acclaimed artist and writer Phillip Keel. It was a response to an overload of information with a lack of actual meaning. The Simple Diary helps you sift through your day and get to the good stuff that actually made it worthwhile. Olasul is the creation of Lorenz Korder Fort, who has set out to create a surfwear brand with, as he describes, a story. The recently launched collection was inspired by the beautiful Peruvian coastline and its unique surf culture. Pictured, is their breathtaking S/S 2010 look book. Joey Showroom is bringing Eubiq NY to workroom this August!!! Eubiq was Launched in 2007 by former architect, and now fashion designer, Shirley Lee. Her boyfriend couldn’t find a pair of pants that he liked and she decided to make him a pair. She may have just been tired of hearing him complain, but we think that’s a pretty sweet gesture. Since Shirley’s first pair of pants, Eubiq NY has grown into a strong menswear collection, with exceptional outerwear, a minimalist aesthetic, and functional details that make it visually interesting, wearable, and timeless. We’re big fans on Eubiq NY and the fact that the brand is designed and manufactured in New York just makes it that much easier to love. London based YMC, was lauched in 1995 by Fraser Moss and Jimmy Collins. Since then the line has steadily developed into a noteworthy brand worldwide. Simply, YMC provides stylish, functional modern clothing. With a such a succinct mission statement they’ve created a customer base that relies on YMC to provide them with distinct pieces that fit timelessly into their wardrobes. Won Hundred

Hailing from Denmark, Won Hundred is a collection designed by Nikolaj Nielsen, that represents a classic modern wardrobe with attention to simplicity and understated design. Pictured, is the F/W 2010 collection, Missing Lines and Hard Shapes, which is inspired by the straight lines and hard shapes from cubistic art, and soft and natural influences from collage art of the same era. The collection includes, coated cotton pieces, worn and creased treatments, and double layers. For fall, Won Hundred got back in touch with their denim roots, and continued to develop their footwear collection with a beautiful unisex flat boot.

LNA

Lauren Alexander and April Leight founded LNA in the summer of 2007. Their goal was to create the perfect men’s tee for women. South Korean designer Hong Eun Ju launched Enzuvan in 2000, and has developed a diffusion line, CmCube, which will be exhibiting at workroom this August, along with several other great Korean collections. Big thanks to Idiel Showroom! CmCube reflects Enzuvan’s signature volume, fit, and free form draping but at a more affordable price point. We’re in love with these one size fits all pieces, easy-peazy! Throw it on and head out the door. Check out their s/s 2010 collection at leading NY retailer, Oak, who got dibs on this amazing line. We’re very intrigued to see what they bring to Vegas in August. Don’t miss it.

We are in love with this Australian based women’s collection that will be showcasing their line at workroom this August. It's nice and warm outside. Plus, it's Friday, and we've found the perfect song to kick off our weekend. Irish trio, Two Door Cinema Club was formed in 2007, and dropped their debut album, Tourist History, on March 1st, 2010 with French record label Kitsune. Above is the video for their single, "Something Good Can Work," shot in the Canary Islands. These cute dorky Irish boys can definitely get down and have a good time. We hope they layered on the SPF. Check em out! Alex Trimble lead vocals, guitar, synths, beats; Kevin Baird bass, vocals; Sam Halliday guitar, vocals. No drummer! They use their mac for a rhythm section. Gotta love it.

We are completely crazy over all the video usage some of our bookmarked bloggers and web-stores have been up to recently. The above images come from an amazing men's editorial from The Contributing Editor titled "Futur3 P3rf3ct". Fashion blogger Garance Dore is also on the video bandwagon. She creates the most charming short snippets that capture the buzz and magic at some of the most noteworthy fashion shows. UK retailer Asos uses a 15 second video feature that allows you to see a model strut the catwalk wearing the item you've selected. We definitely wish we were in New York this weekend to check out the Hester Street Fair. This LES flea market/street fair, created by Suchin Pak, her brother Suyhun, Ron Castellano, and Adam Zeller will debut this weekend April 24th & 25th, and continue every subsequent weekend from April-December. The fair will feature a carefully curated selection of vendors who specialize in vintage finds, cool crafts and what sounds like some seriously amazing food. We can't think of a better way to enrich community spirit than through shopping and food! Gargyle and Opening Ceremony, two of our fave shops are also joining in the Hester Street Fair fun! We love a good sock and it seems that the trend of ankle baring inseams in menswear has led to a new found attention to sock choice. Lady Grey Schools Us

Designers Jill Martinelli and Sabine Le Guyader have already received a plethora of press and accolades for their most recent collection, Sacred Geometry, which echos recurring natural forms that are both "geographical and celestial". Using materials such as quartz crystals, silver, bronze, geodes, and pyrite, Lady Grey creates unique sophisticated pieces with organic edginess. Alan Eckstein and Timo Weiland are the design duo behind the buzzworthy emerging line which carries Timo's namesake. Timo Weiland has quickly developed from an accessories line into a full blown men's and women's collection. It's great to see pieces from their, extremely well received, Spring 2010 collection arriving in two of our bookmarked online shopping spots; Forward and I Don't Like Mondays. Clearly these boys know what they are doing, and we're excited to see what they come up with next.

Blackbird Presents: Moore & Giles Trunk Show

Blackbird in Seattle just rocks. That's really all there is to it. The multi faceted retailer will be throwing a trunk show, April 9th and 10th, with 77 year old leather maker Moore & Giles, who is bringing their Airstream filled with goods and parking it in front of The Field House. Last month the Sartorialist had a vintage photo contest. The winning submission will receive the amazing Celine inspiration book. Over 2,000 images were submitted, and given the Sartorialist's popularity and the fashion crowd's love of vintage photos we're not surprised. Along with the Sartorialist,My Parents Were Awesome, features reader submitted photos of their parents, before they were parents. Essentially, back when they were awesome. We love the nostalgia and reverence of the blog. The images reflect a specific generation's take on style that's more authentic than what was showing on a runway or in a magazine at that time. They're real people wearing real clothes. Similarly, Urban Outfitters is having a contest this month, in collaboration with My Mom the Style Icon. Contestsants are asked to tweet exceptionally stylish photos of their mothers in hopes of winning some sweet swag. Vintage photos have always been a great source of inspiration for designers and stylists, but recently it seems that more people are looking back into the heritage and legacy of their parents' style as means to influence their own. We love it.

L.A. Fashion Collective celebrates local talent

While downtown “fashion week” festivities have commenced, a few events still linger on the Westside, showcasing local designers in nontraditional venues and presentations.
The L.A. Fashion Collective highlighted four contemporary collections at a crowded cocktail party Wednesday night. Looks from the fall/winter 2010 lines of Dolan, Barlow, Jane Oh and Ai for Ai were on display at Bond St. inside the Thompson Hotel. Two models donned one ensemble for about five minutes then changed into another designer’s clothing, giving ample time to take in the black cocktail dresses and slouchy fleece pants, but difficult to see everything in a timely manner.
But the party seemed to be more about support than actually seeing the clothes. Guests at the event were a mix of fashion folk and friends and fans of the designers who excitedly snapped pictures and seemed genuinely thrilled for their moment.
And from the clothing I did see, Ai for Ai shined as an interesting collection of fluid and modern separates with a slight goth undertone. Think "Twilight," grown up and much more girly.

Every single stitch, button, thread and piece of fabric is Grown & Sewn in the United States of America. That was half of Rob Magness’s concept, to source everything domestically. The Ralph Lauren alum’s other idea was to combine denim fits with khaki cotton twill fabrics. The result are some very nice looking, wearable, washable goods.

I first heard about Rob’s collection at the second Pop Up Flea in November. A very nice young lady told me about their new store in TriBeCa, but it wasn’t until a few weeks ago in Las Vegas that I could meet the designer and see the collection. I’ll be honest, at first pass I wasn’t sold on everything (and there are a few pieces that are definitely not for me) but on the whole, the line is excellent. There are three fits to choose from, and just like with denim, there are varying wash options — everything from raw to distressed. (Note the top photo, distressed on the left, medium in the middle and raw on the right.)

In Vegas, Rob and I spoke about the difficultly he had in sourcing everything in the line. The fact of the matter is, while a lot of people know about how manufacturing has disappeared from the U.S., a compounding problem for the companies still doing production domestically is the fact that nearly all of the support and suppliers are also gone. So sourcing something completely domestic, as Rob did, takes five times longer than it would if you were making the goods overseas. Actually, I bet it takes ten times as long but that’s just my best guess. Maybe if Rob reads this he can weigh in.

In addition to the khaki pants, Grown & Sewn also just opened a retail store in TriBeCa at 184 Duane Street (probably my favorite street in Manhattan). The company has also produced a collection of accessories that includes a few really nice looking distressed leather belts and a khaki tote bag / wine carrier in collaboration with friends that own a winery. All in all, good values and good people. Grown & Sewn right here at home.

LAS VEGAS TRADE SHOW LANDSCAPE EXPANDS

New venues, multiple competing shows and an absolutely massive assortment of brands created a rather overwhelming atmosphere in Las Vegas last week. Although many shows or shows-within-shows aimed for intimacy, the sheer volume of exhibiting brands in the city made navigating the show circuit akin to running a marathon.

The granddaddy of the Vegas shows, Advanstar’s MAGIC Marketplace, which ran Feb. 16-18, continued its reign as the largest and most sprawling of the Vegas shows. Covering two so-called campuses this season, the show was split by gender. The Las Vegas Convention Center housed the women’s section WWD MAGIC, MAGICKids, Sourcing at MAGIC and a new show-within-a-show concept, the FN Platform, an aesthetically pleasing showcase of all-white booths that housed approximately 500 women’s, men’s and kids’ footwear brands, including major players such as Kenneth Cole and Camuto Group. Peggy Merck of Camuto Group reported brisk business and steady traffic for the company both at its FN Platform booth, which showcased the brands Arturo Chang, BCBGeneration, BCBGMaxAzria, Kensie Girl, Lucky Brand and Vince Camuto, and its large Jessica Simpson apparel and lifestyle booth in the WWD MAGIC section.

In addition, the Convention Center also housed the Pool Tradeshow, which continued to be an artsy/kitschy mix of apparel, shoes, accessories and household gadgets, some of which were available directly for sale in the Cash and Carry section.

The Mandalay Bay Convention Center, across town, was the site of the rest of Advanstar’s offerings, and had a decidedly more masculine bent. Upstairs, the MAGIC show continued with sections for traditional menswear, premium and contemporary menswear, street-driven and young men’s apparel, and S.L.A.T.E., a special juried area for skate, surf and street brands. While the Premium and Street sections seemed cramped and overrun with brands that offered sameness and row after row of men’s underwear brands, S.L.A.T.E.’s more intimate and relaxed atmosphere served it well. Key brands showing there included L-R-G; Obey, which offered current denim trends such as acid-wash leggings and coated jeans at affordable prices; and Triple Five Soul, whose fall 2010 collection was inspired by the pre-Cold War Soviet Union.

The first floor of Mandalay Bay served as the new home of Project Las Vegas, which continued to be the most extensive showcase for men’s and women’s premium denim and contemporary fashion. Well organized and easy to navigate, it featured more than 750 brands. Included in the vast mix were four impressive lines making their debut: Improvd, Project founder Sam Ben-Avraham’s directional womenswear collection that offers cool style at affordable prices; The Same Guy, a rather uncharacteristically graphic- and logo-free line of men’s and women’s basics from Christian Audigier; Propriété de, a men’s workwear- and street-inspired line; and Double Fantasy, a line of chambray collared shirts by showroom owner Vince Gonzales. Established LA-based denim brand Kasil also unveiled its new The Workshop collaboration platform at the show. The first looks were created by Rachel Zoe’s former assistant Taylor Jacobson and included several ultra skinny fits in a variety of washes. While most exhibitors reported good results from the show, foot traffic seemed steady but not as intense as in prior seasons.

Advanstar also launched a new show concept in a room just outside the entrance to Project. Dubbed Workroom, it featured a mix of approximately 20 apparel, footwear and accessories brands and was meant to resemble a cutting-edge specialty boutique that specialized in cool and up-and-coming designs. Key exhibitors there included Lacoste, Radcliffe Denim, Hyden Yoo and the surf-inspired brand ambsn. The show also featured the debut of Cloth, the new line by former Anzevino & Florence designer William Anzevino, and the return of the brand Kanvis, which had been on hiatus the past few seasons. Designed by Kfir Levy, this men’s and women’s line no longer features basics and is much more fashion driven than before and now features asymmetric jackets, henleys with interesting hardware detail and wispy knit tops.

Further down The Strip, at the posh Bellagio Hotel, trade show powerhouse ENK International hosted the fourth and largest ever edition of its ENK Vegas show, which featured more than 150 hand-picked exhibitors across two ballrooms in a setting that was again intimate, elegant and inviting. Top denim brands such as Hudson, Parasuco, J Brand, Paige, Serfontaine, Habitual, Agave and Citizens of Humanity served as some of the show’s key attractions and offered the season’s top denim trends including the ubiquitous jegging and dark-wash styles. Serfontaine showed edgy, rock-inspired styles that included a denim jacket with leopard-print sequins on the back and distressed jeans with glimmering sequin insets.

Capsule Las Vegas also grew and included approximately 150 mostly street, up-and-coming and young designer brands in its location on the fifth floor ballroom of The Venetian hotel. Although traffic appeared on the slow side on Wednesday, the final day of the two-day event, exhibitors overall said they were happy with the results of the show, which again featured clothing racks and wooden shelves to separate its "booths." Among the many impressive brands on display there was Temple Bags, a new LA-based bag company that creates modern satchels and knapsacks from recycled surplus WWII cloth.

The next round of trade shows in Vegas is set to run earlier than usual next season: Aug. 17-19.

Workroom Room Bows With Curated Collections

This season marked the debut of Workroom, the new upscale trade show located next to the Project Global Trade Show at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center.

With just 21 lines, the show featured an airy, loft-like atmosphere.

Among the lines showing were Factory by Erik Hart, Kova & T, Radcliffe Denim, Sitbon Laundry and Ai for Ai.

Gretchen Jones, designer of Portland, Ore.–based contemporary women’s line MothLove, gave the show high marks for looks and location.

“I was pleased with the proximity to Project, enjoyed the layout and design of the venue,” she said. Although traffic seemed slower than she had anticipated, Jones said American Rag, Atmosphere, Moule and Candy Store Collective were among the retailers that shopped the show.

“I would have loved to have seen more contemporary womenswear buyers, as the traffic seemed menswear-driven,” she said. However, being that A/W 2010 is only my second national collection, I feel as though exposure and brand recognition are an [integral] part in participating in any trade show, and from last season to current I found growth in actual and anticipated sales/orders.”

This is the second national collection for MothLove, which features sophisticated bohemian pieces in organic cotton, silk, bamboo and soy-blend fabrics.

Anna Korte, who designs Portland-based accessories lines Im:mortal and AK Vintage, was equally enthusiastic about the look of the show.

“The venue was beautiful and spacious,” she said. “Everyone who walked in commented on how good it felt in the space. The coordinators did an amazing job creating a fresh atmosphere and a carefully curated group of just 25 brands.”

The Im:mortal collection features leather bags, pouches and accessories, as well as scarves, pendants and necklaces.

She also felt traffic was somewhat slow but said that “all the right buyers were there,” including representatives from American Rag, Shotwell, Zebraclub and Need Supply Co.

Yves Spinelli, a rep for the Hatch showroom was at Workroom showing the Kova & T collection. Hatch was also showing Factory by Eric Hart, Lacoste Mens and Womens and Lacoste Red at Workroom. (Hatch representatives were also showing their collections at Project.)

“The overall impression of the show from me and accounts with whom I spoke was that it was a very nice space to showcase emerging lines and focus more attention, as things don’t get lost in the vastness of Project,” Spinelli said.

The new show drew several buyers from Asia, as well as a mix of well-established specialty boutiques from the East and West Coasts and new stores, Spinelli said.

Although traffic at Workroom was lighter than at Project, Spinelli said, “The quality of accounts that came through were more selective and serious.”

He also gave the venue high marks for atmosphere and selection.

“The space was really nice and open and intimate, and it was a nice place to meet and work with clients,” he said. “There were some nice emerging lines in there, and it was a nice mix of new and interesting designers.”—Alison A. Nieder

Kanvis was launched in 2006 by long time pals Omer Levy and Kfir Levy who shared a vision of creating men's classics and denim with clean, subtle designs and an eye toward minimalism. The line quickly garnered a devoted following and stores across in the United States, Canada and Japan such as Fred Segal, In God We Trust, and Zero Trader.

The downturn of the economy forced Kanvis into creative hibernation. During these times, they received requests and encouragements from retailers to return to business. Kanvis designed a small women's spring collection and is now developing a full fall 2010 collection for men and women in addition to the relaunch of their denim line which was Kanvis' strength. They have their own factory where the collection is produced.

Kanvis is coming back strong with a debut at workroom this February 2010.

In more pop-up retail good news, one of our favorite collectives, Surface To Air opened up another store in a better location in the Marais right on rue Vielle du Temple in the hipster 3rd arrondissemont. The store is not only bigger and next door to the gallery Yvon Lambert, but includes many collaborations including their latest with Kings of Leon, plus older collabs with Justice and Solve Sundsbo.

In addition to a new store is a pop-up store inside called Bless, open until April featuring various accessories and a collaboration with Longchamp.

Workroom Set to Launch in Las Vegas

Another show will join the Las Vegas trade show lineup in February when Workroom bows Feb. 16–18 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas.

Organized by Andre Warren, Stephanie Seeley and Sharifa Cudjoe, Workroom is being billed as a new and independent trade show. (Warren is chief merchandising officer of Advanstar Communications’ fashion group, Stephanie Seeley is Pooltradeshow’s show director and Sharifa Cudjoe is director of the Project Global Trade Show. Project and Pool are divisions of Advanstar and run concurrently with another Advanstar property, the MAGIC Marketplace.)

“It’s a completely separate, individual, independent show,” Warren said. “The three of us banded together within the company and are putting on this independent show. We created the kind of show that we, as buyers, would like to see.”

Prior to joining Advanstar, Warren was the menswear buyer for Fred Segal Fun in Santa Monica, Calif. Seeley has a background as a buyer as well, most recently holding the post of buyer for American Rag in Los Angeles.

Slated to be held alongside and concurrent with Project, Workroom will be miniscule in comparison with the biggies that Advanstar produces. Its roster of 20 to 25 brands will include Surface to Air, Erik Hart, Kova & T and Deus Ex Machina. “We’re trying to keep it small and create a unique experience. The vibe is like nothing under the Advanstar landscape. ‘Lo-fi’ is a catch phrase we’re using to describe it,” Warren said. An open-floor plan, nontraditional booth systems and communal areas will help differentiate Workroom from Advanstar’s other shows.

Zuriick was established in 2006 from a desire for a simple but lively lightweight shoe with a low profile sole. The first product line was only 300 pairs of our original style, the Ake. During our initial season, shoes were purchased by local boutiques and sold out quickly. Thus was born the demand for Zuriick.

Menswear

Hyden Yoo started in 2005 with the idea of changing how men dressed in the workplace. With no formal fashion training, he left behind a corporate job for NYC and immersed himself in all things fashion. He landed internships and freelance positions with some of fashion's most prestigious companies. In the mean time, he managed to produced a small collection of dress shirts for men that were cut shorter than most brands on the market. This proposition provided his customers with the option of wearing the shirts both to work or left un-tucked with jeans.

After several seasons of gaining experience and sharpening his craft in the industry, Hyden launched a complete menswear collection in the fall of 2008. The collection showcased his philosophy of building pieces with subtle details on modern silhouettes to update classic tailored sportswear. The pieces seamlessly bridged the gap between Wall Street bankers and Brooklyn hipsters by incorporating concepts from both worlds. Each piece has detailed construction, and uses high quality fabrics with a great hand feel.

With the success of his Hyden Yoo menswear, he will be introducing a complete women's collection in the spring of 2010 with highly wearable pieces, and the women who wear them will make a perfect counterpart for the Hyden Yoo man.
